Question.
Where, in the registry, does the System Information snap-
in get the information for the System Summary entries
for "System Manufacturer" and "System Model"?

OK that was the easy part. Here comes the head scratcher
parts. Two separate problems.

Background for both problems.
I've been running Win2K SP2 for about two years now. When
SP3 was first released I installed and had no end of
problems so I uninstalled it. The problems remained so I
lived with them until last weekend. I disconnected all
other drives and did a low level format of my primary hard
drive where Win2K resided by writing 0's to the drive
using the WD Utility disk. In fact I did it twice to make
sure all data was wiped. I installed Win2K as a clean
install to the C: drive which is a single partition and is
set as the Master on the Primary IDE channel. All went
well. No errors no (install) problems, no crashes.

System Information for reference. This is an ancient
computer by current standards but has worked well for
several years.
Tyan Trinity S1890 AT MB with 512MB of onboard L2 cache.
VIA MVP3 Chipset
Award BIOS 4.51PG 09/23/99 the last that was available.
AMD K6-2 500MHz CPU
384MB PC100 SDRAM (the max that is supported)
3dFX Voodoo 3000 AGP Graphics Adapter
Adaptec AHA2940UW Pro PCI SCSI adapter IRQ 5.
3Com 3C905 PCI NIC IRQ 10.
Sound BLaster AWE64 ISA sound card IRQ 7
US Robotics 5685 56K ISA voice modem using COM 2/IRQ3.
WD 13GB HD set as Master on IDE channel 1. (ATA 66)
Matsushita CD-R SCSI burner.
WD 6.4GB HD set as Master on IDE channel 2 (Drive is only
ATA 33 capable).
DVS DVD ATAPI DVD drive set as Slave on IDE channel 2.
I reconnected the D: drive the 6.4GB drive D: and it was
OK too. Recognized just fine by Windows with no problems
and reported as Healthy.

Now the problems.

Problem 1.
The USR modem reported Error 680 there was no dialtone.
Modem Line/Telco jack was plugged into the phone jack in
the wall and a phone was connected to the Phone jack on
the modem. I could clearly hear a good, clear, steady
dialtone on the phone. When I clicked "Connect" I head
the realy in the modem click and I also heard the modem
try an size the line listening to the phone where the
dialtone was still present but not as loud as the modem
was in the line now also. Error 680 again. Disconnected
the phone from the modem and rebooted. Error 680
continues. Tried new downloaded drivers from USR for the
modem. Error 680. Reinstalled the native Win2K drivers.
Error 680. All time the Device Manager recognized and
reported the modem as OK. OK maybe it's a modem problem. I
took a USR OEM 1787 modem out of another computer
uninstalled the 5685 and installed the 1787 modem and it's
drivers. Error 680 continued. I had another junk modem I
was saving for emergencies an old pice of crap LogiCode
33HP CL ISA modem. I installed that piece of crap 33.6
modem in the same ISA slot the USR modems were in. Windows
recognized it an it dialed and connected on the first try
It's what I'm connect with right now in fact.

Anybody got any ideas on how to get back to using a USR
56K ISA modem.

Problem 2.
No sound at all.
My Creative AWE64 sound card worked just fine with
Windows2000 before the reinstall. But absolutely nothing
after the reinstall on Win2K a few days ago. Device
Manager shows all it components present and working OK on
IRQ 9 but there was no sownd. There were no drivers
availabl from creative specifically for Win2K but then
again it work in Win2K for over two years just fine. I
tried the latest 95/98/NT drivers nothing, absolutely
nothing. Went back to the native drivers offered by
Win2K, same thing nothing. Like the modem I grabbed a PCI
SB16 sound card from another computer and installed it.
Windows recognized it right away and I installed the
drivers off the Creative CD then rebooted. Still no sound
at all. Device Manager shows the SB16 working fine.
Device Manager also shows under Sound, Video and Game
Controllers the following items:
Audio Codecs
Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI (WDM)
Game Port for Creative
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Drivers
Media Control Devices
and
Video Codecs.

Could any of these be conflicting with the SB16 sound card
keeping it from feeding the speakers. The same extra
components are also shown with the AWE64 sound card as
well.

You now know my sad tale of woe here. Can anyone offer
any insights?

Thanks in advance for any help you offer.

Hello John,

Which SP is now on your PC ?

Most of the drivers are very SP / HF dependent.
(SP == Servicepack
HF == Hotfix)
