1 more SP2 question

Running Vista Home Premium. When the SP 2 is released, will it simply (
automatically ) download as another typical Windows update? Or will I need
to do more drastic measures? Thanks.

It will eventually be piped through WU..

Often they put it online significantly earlier than they deliver it via WU,
but again a lot of people believe Win 7 is more stable, and it's no doubt
faster and more capable than Vista SP anything and there is a good chance
that Win 7 RC will be available free on line prior to Vista SP2. You could
also get both and compare them when each is available.

Then when you felt like it, you could take the Win 7 DVD and upgrade your
Vista to it as well.

I didn't even KNOW about 7! See? I am so out of touch with the PC changes.
Life seemed so simple when I had 95,98,98SE, and finally XP Home. This Vista
isnt the OS I was expecting. In fact I think it is lame but hey that's one
mans opinion here so don't flame me OK?!
So please explain ( s-l-o-w-l-y ) my best route. Try 7 first and then go to
SP2 if 7 isnt acceptable? Do I delete 7 first before I put in SP2? Please
excuse my ignorance. You don't know me but trust me, if theres a mistake to
be made, I'll make it! Thanks all of you for your help and patience. T.J.

Hi Whitey--

You can do both. I don't know the exact timing of Win 7's RC public
release--but the dates floating around are 5/5 and 5/10. I also don't know
when SP2 will be released as well. From what I've read, it will be later
than Win 7.

I've used SP2 and I couldn't tell any difference in SP1, although I'm sure
there were enough differences to fill a release document--mostly hotfixes.
I'm sure there are fixes that are substantive, to be catelogued but I
couldn't tell what they were.

With Win 7 there are significant performance changes. There is more driver
compatibility and there are some nice features (and from now to RTM maybe
there will be more although it's probably very "locked down" by now).

I couldn't find any official word on a way to go retrograde from Win 7 to
Vista on an upgrade Win 7 from Vista. Maybe someone else knows.

Here's what you can do. If Win 7 becomes available first, go on an upgrade
to it. See how you like it--it's very stable. I'm not sure that there will
be an official supported downgrade route to Vista, although there will be to
XP and that's nothing particularly new and it has nothing to do with MSFT
worried that Win 7 isn't much better as a lot of trolls have crowed.

If there is a downgrade route possible to Vista, it may be that there is a
split second rollback listing on the screen after the firmware splash
screen. It's been so long since I upgraded a Vista box to Win 7 that I
didn't look for one. Some people are saying if you look quickly you can see
it and hit the down arrow key and then select it.

If you have a Vista DVD, I'd partition and install Windows 7 as a clean
install until there is further documentation. I suspect that when the CPP
for Win 7 rolls out, the release notes will address this issue.

You cannot upgrade directly from XP however, meaning you can't be on the XP
desktop and install Win 7 and run the setup. You can do this from Vista of
course, and MSFT wants to see a lot of these run because they know that's
where a good amount of their business will be.

Better idea - wait for Win 7 SP1. Install Vista SP2 as that will be
around sooner. Never, ever, install MS's first release of an OS.
