WinXP boots normally, but apps freeze/hang for about 60-90 seconds
after the desktop appears. After that period of time, everything works
OK.

There is one flagged entry (see Warning below) that appears in the
Event Log at approx. the same time as the desktop freeze ends, but I
don't have a clue how to fix that problem.

I've already tried the periph remove/replace method without success,
so any other suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks!

The error message means that the network card in the PC does not find
the DHCP server to gain a network address. Therefore Windows assigns
an address automatically. While I am not sure if this is causing the
delay, you should check the network setup to get rid of the problem.

I had this problem for a while after installing DSL with a LinkSys
LNE100TX NIC...it would probably happen with any NIC, though. Here's
what I did to solve it:

1) Go to "Start" -> "Control Panel"
2) Click on "Network & Internet Connections"
3) Click on "Network Connections"
4) Right click on the icon for your Ethernet card connected to your
DSL modem _> Choose "Properties"
5) Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Click "Properties"
6) In the "General" tab check off "Use the following IP address"
7) Enter an internal IP address 192.168.xxx.xxx (replace the x's with
a number of your choice)
8) Enter a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
9) Click "OK"
10) Click "OK"

This made it better. Then, I did the following:

1) Right click on "My Computer", click "Manage".
2) Double click on "Services and Applications" to expand the list,
then double-click on "Services".
3) In the right hand pane, look for Services that are "Started", but
under the "Startup Type" column, they say "Manual".
4) Right click on the Service Name, click "Properties", then click on
the selection list arrow for "Startup Type".
5) Change the "Startup Type" to "Automatic".
6) Click OK.

Make a list of each Service you change, just in case!!!

Reboot.

My desktop delay went from almost 2 minutes, to next to nothing!!!

Hope this helps

Jim
