1 Gig of memory makes a difference!

I never really thought it would, but 1 Gig of memory instead of 512 MB
really makes a difference.

I'm running Windows XP with SP2, and have a PCChips V21G motherboard, with
onboard Via C7 1.5 GHz processor.

Now, with twice the RAM, I notice about half the lag time when opening
folders to view, launching programs, and lots of other things.

Give it a dose of CCleaner, and it`ll probably go faster still <g>.

I've read that the biggest noticeable gain in performance in XP comes
when RAM is upgraded from 512mb to one gig. After that the gain isn't
as dramatic.

Though that doesn't mean I'm going to pull one of my 1gig RAM sticks
out. :P

I've never heard of that program, but I guess it must be some sort of
registry cleaner, bloatware or malware remover. I'm not sure - I installed
the OS myself, and have relatively few programs installed. (about two dozen,
all of which I use) I only allow two of them to load on bootup - the AVG
Antivirus, and No Frills Timer. The former I allow for obvious reasons, the
latter because I only get 150 hours of connect time per month, and this
helps keep me from using it all up early. (and not having any for the last
week each month)

DRAMatic? Was that a memory pun?
 
2 gigs is almost mandatory now. There are CAD
applications that will use 1.3 gigs right now, and
that is going up. Else you are running from swap
space on your hard drive, and that technology
has not improved much, and bottlenecks performance.
Vista needs video space just for the OS, and if
you have one of the big apps open, and you are
loading from disk, you will get a C++ runtime
error, and crash. I think that is simply a memory
allocation error. That will mean every time you
open a memory hog, you will have to sit for about
a minute for ram to sort out .. or you will crash.
The day for a 300 gig solid-state hard drive is
here ... bigtime.
