Is there a utility that will tell me which USB port ( 1.0 or 2.0 )I have on
a Dell machine that is 7 years old? I suspect it is 1.0 but would like to
check.

The machine is 7 years old...that says it all.
Unless you've added a PCI , USB2 card...the ports would be USB1

Just go to Device Manager and look at the Universal Serial Bus
controllers. Expand the list. If you have "Enhanced" anywhere, you have
USB 2.0. If not, then you only have USB 1.1.

With the machine being 7 years old i would suspect that, unless you have
added a USB PCI card, that your USB ports are version 1. USB ports that
support version 2 are, on my machine anyway, labelled with a blue and red
sticker marked 'certified hi-speed usb'
