Properties. Port 110 mail server. smtp is port 587

I have plain text mail sending format.

I Use comcast and windows mail. Antivirus is Mcafee packaged with Comcast.
Never had problem until now. I noticed a popup box asking to compact windows
mail messages. May have too much saved email. is that a possibility? When I
deleted 110 fw messages from a sender, things got a little better.

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

If it was already unchecked, the next most likely culprit is your antivirus.
Make sure McAfee is not configured to scan incoming or outgoing
email.

The prompt to allow compaction to proceed will occur every 100
program closings. It is not based on anything else.

I unchecked the "logon using secure..." and also unchecked scanning incoming
and outgoing email in Mcafee. I still get the pop up box and same error
messages after rebooting. The server name and account name said "NULL" - I
don't know why that is there. Could that have anything to do with it?

It sounds like your McAfee is still interfering with Windows Mail.
McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:
