It is a common Outlook problem for which there is apparently not a cure.

If you post your Outlook Version and the complete text of the error message,
someone might be able to help you out.

Not true. First, it is generally not an Outlook problem. Second, there are
a number of "cures", depending on the actual cause of the problem. The
error indicates that Outlook was unable to connect to the mail server. One
possible reason is some anti-virus software preventing the connection - if
you have anti-virus software, try turning off mail scanning and see if
you're able to connect. Another possibility is that a firewall is blocking
the connection - generally, you'll need ports 25 and 110 open in order to
connect to your mail server.

While the causes you cite are generally true, there are other causes of
this problem that you have apparently not identified. I have this
problem on an XP machine with E-Trust AV software and on a Win2K Pro
machine with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. My firewall is a
Linksys router which has worked well for years. There is a Cisco router
at the XP location.

My guess is that one of more of the Windows update has trashed something
that is not likely to be fixed, which is why I will have to go with a
new email clent on Jan 1, 2004.

By the way, Outlook Express does not exhibit any of these problems. If
it had a decent backup function, I'd use it instead of whatever I
ultimately decide to use.
