disable it.

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page.

It worked for me. YMMV

I've had Error 0x80072EE2 suddenly appear on Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000
SP4. Both machines could update from WindowsUpdate.com for a long while,
then suddenly they could not any longer.

On the XP machine, the symptoms were that I could get to the update site,
scan my machine and select the updates, but when the downloads started, they
would always fail. My update monitor was always stuck at 5%. Nothing the
technical bulletins for Error 0x80072EE2 I found on the Internet worked.

On the Windows 2000 machine, the symptoms were similar but with a slight
difference: when I got to the welcome page of Windows update, I immediately
got some error message that the update wasn't working and was given the
suggestion by the page to e-mail Microsoft with the Error 0x80072EE2.

I figured out what the cause is: It's Microsoft's OWN software from
WindowsUpdate.com!

The XP workstation started failing first and I did not know why. It was not
until after I used WindowsUpdate on the 2000 workstation that I knew what
caused it. I knew I had recently applied the .NET framework update on both
machines.

With the 2000 machine, the .NET framework download worked on the first
Windows update, but failed after the patch on the 2nd Windows update. After
that, I got the error page. After uninstalling the .NET framework, I can now
use Windows Update again.

I have verified this with two Windows 2000 SP4 workstations and one Windows
XP SP2 workstation.

Solution: Uninstall .NET framework and avoid it until Microsoft fixes this
Microsoft-supplied malfunction.

Windows Update Fails:
Click on START and the RUN put in each line seen below and clicked on
OK. (do each one line at a time)
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wups.dll
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.

Besides being posted in the wrong newsgroup
this "solution" probably won't help with the subject code.

Note: your error code 0x80072EE2 is unrelated to
0x80072EFD (the topic of this thread.)

However, you could try helping others having *your* symptom.
Try a search?

(Google Groups search for
80072EE2 OR 0x80072EE2 MVP OR MSFT group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate

- ordered by Date to capture current thinking about this symptom
- Canadian server used to avoid Google Groups Beta server
