Hi,

I get this message when I click on the Start Scan button when WD is
informing me that I haven't scanned my system in a few days (there is a
yellow bar). I get the error message in the title when I click this button.
The only way to run a scan is via the Scan menu.

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Tom,

Try this first:
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.

This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an admin.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs?

There are many pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and
signature update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºst.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

What build of Windows Defender--the top number when you go to Help, About,
and look at version numbers?

If this is less than 1.1.1347.0, I'd recommend going to www.microsoft.com
and hitting the "more downloads" link (we've fallen "below the fold!") and
downloading anew from the download center--run the downloaded file to update
what you have in place. Spynet membership will be set to basic or lower as
you choose during setup--you'll need to visit that setting after
installation completes if you want advanced membership.

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0, which is less than 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1441.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1468.9

Isn't WD updated via Windows Update? I'm working on my home PC and I can
run Windows Update here and everything is up to date.

Ok, I'll try what you're suggesting and post back.

For reasons I don't know, version updates to that first item, which I equate
to the UI portion of Windows Defender, require a new download, and aren't
(as yet) automatically notified to the current users. The other two
pieces--engine and signatures (they've agreed to call these definitions, I
believe, but the signature terminology is still all over the product!)--come
via auto-update.

Hi Ençel,

Are you talking about Run as...? I log in with an account that is an
administrator. Do I have to log in with THE actual Administrator account?

Actually, my engine and definitions are up to date. It's WD that is an
older version. See Bill's post and my reply for the details. My question is
why WD is not updated via Windows Update?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0 Does NOT get updated
Engine Version: 1.1.1441.0 Gets updated
Signature Version: 1.14.1468.9 Gets updated

Thanks for your feedback.
