I have two IBM Deskstar DTLA-307020 disks (which became Hitachi at some
point).
The two disks have about 10-20 of bad clusters, but other than that are
perfectly functional, with both win2000 and winXP.
As they are 3-years old, thought it's about time for a low-level format and
a general fitness test. On I went and downloaded the Drive Fitness Test
utility (DFT v3.51) from http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm, and
run it.
To my surprise, whatever I tried i kept getting the message:
0x71 - Defective defice. Device is not ready.
Technical Result Code (TRC): 71029BE4
That's weird. Although DFT insists on "device is not ready", for window it
was ready and steady...
Any ideas how to convince DFT to work and get my disks low-level-formatted?
thanks,
Barak
