Not true at all.

See how local it is on a payphone.

40p will get you 20mins on a payphone , not on 0845.

0845 and 0870 are both in there same class in a way.

Someone moans about 0845/0870's on a daily basis don't they, quite funny how many times i see the same conversation on forums.

Now 0845's and 0870's serve a purpose for multi-location businesses, such as myself, i have an 0870 and an 0845 mainly for the purpose of ease of use.

We have phones both in the UK, USA, Mobile Phones and pagers linked to the same number. Now how about i give you around 10-15 seperate numbers and tell you to remember them all...!

Using an 0845/0870 is not specific to the location and thus why everybody is using them, there is a reason for it before everybody gets into the habbit of knocking things.

The question remains, are numbers with 0845 & 0870 prefixes more expensive than local rate calls?

Nobody seems to have answered the question with any authority.

I, for one, am curious.

I guess I could Google (or 'Ask' even) but does anybody here really know?

Looking at my mobile phone bill, I'm guessing they're not premium rate, but I'm not sure.

And Techy, go take a chill pill ;)

Obviously both 0845 and 0870 are going to be more expensive than a call to your neighbour down the road.

If i remember correctly, an 0845 is a lo-call rate, which is between 1p to 5p depending upon the time of the call.

An 0870 call however is anywhere from 10p to 15p once again depending upon the time you call it.

They are more expensive, however the companies make no profit from these types of numbers, you only make profit from the 09xx prefixes generally.

Here ya go guys....

Seems calling these 0845 and 0870 numbers are more expensive than calling a standard landline number, lots of people have mobiles now with an allowance of bundled free minutes which they use as there main phone instead of using a landline..

These minutes are not included if you ring 0845-0870 numbers...You will be billed for these calls..

I been using this site for ages and I have saved a tidy penny on me bills I can tell thee...:thumb:

So, in general, avoid using 0870 numbers eh?

There's a website called " SAYNOTO0870" which gives alternative numbers to 0870 and 0845 if they are available (not always). I've used it quite a lot and I'm sure it's saved me money.

Yep, I know, have had it bookmarked for some considerable time now, maybe a couple of years, since somebody on this forum drew our attention to it.

But thanks for the heads up anyway :)

I would avoid 0870's to be honest, we are trying to switch ours to 0845's which costs the same as a local call.
