Intel releases Core i9 Processor for laptops

Intel releases Core i9 Processor for laptops

In a move that is almost certainly a reaction to competition in the mobile CPU market (*cough* Ryzen *cough*), Intel has announced details about their most powerful laptop processor, which they describe as “the best gaming and creation laptop processor Intel has ever built” – the Intel Core i9-8950HK. The 8th generation Core i9 Processor has been designed specifically for laptops, and takes its place as the most powerful CPU in their new range of mobile processors. It is their first mobile processor to feature six cores and 12 threads, and according to Intel the chip can achieve a turbo frequency of up to 4.8GHz due to their new Thermal Velocity Boost feature (more on that below).

The processor will be overclockable, and capable of handling virtual reality (VR), high-performance gaming, content creation, and 4K video streaming. When benchmarked against the 8th generation Core i7-7820HK, the Core i9-8950HK achieved a 29% increase in performance and 41% increase in frames per second.

The new processor was revealed at an event today in Beijing. As well as the Core i9, Intel will also be introducing new Core i5 and Core i7 mobile processors, all of which are based on the Coffee Lake architecture (14nm++). In addition, Intel announced a new Core platform extension that combines the benefits of 8th Gen Intel Core processors with Intel Optane memory. This should help increase overall speeds when compared to more traditional memory systems, especially when it comes to game load times.

Features - Intel Core i9-8950HK
  • Six cores and 12 threads
  • Based on Coffee Lake platform (14nm++ architecture)
  • Fully unlocked
  • Intel Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) which increases clock frequency up to 200MHz if temperature is low enough and turbo power budget is available
  • Turbo frequency up to 4.8GHz
  • Intel Optane Memory

There is currently no news about the expected prices or release date for laptops featuring these new processors, so watch this space.
