Google has been trying to break in to the video game market for years now. In 2014 they attempted to purchase Twitch, the live streaming video platform, but lost out to Amazon. Kotaku reported last year that Google were planning on launching a streaming service and some kind of gaming hardware, code-named Project Yeti.
In October 2018 Google announced Project Stream; a game streaming service in partnership with Ubisoft which allowed users to play Assassin's Creed: Odyssey through the Chrome browser. Project Stream was a limited beta test available only to certain users in the USA, and ended on 15th January 2019. The service differed from other game streaming services in that the game was run from Google's servers instead of local hardware, with just the visual feedback sent to the user's screen.
It would seem now that Google will be making a big announcement at the upcoming Game Developers' Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, USA. They sent out an invitation which featured an animated gif, showing a light at the end of a hallway followed by the date 19th March 2019, the words "Gather around" and finally the Google 'G' logo. The invite promised that "all will be revealed" during their keynote.
Mysterious indeed.
The announcement could be about game streaming, but it is rumoured that Google may reveal details about their own gaming hardware. Google has previously been involved at GDC, but their focus in prior years tended to be in relation to Android game development.
The invite seems designed to heighten anticipation, suggesting that they have something big to share. Watch this space.
