This week Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD, delivered the opening keynote at Computex 2019, where she revealed that the company will be launching five new processors in July.
The processors are part of the third generation of the Ryzen desktop processor family, and will range in price from $199 for the 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 3600 to $499 for the 12-core/24-thread Ryzen 9 3900X. All five of the CPUs will be available on 7th July 2019, and you can check out the full specifications here.
The 3rd generation of Ryzen is powered by AMD's new 7nm 'Zen 2' core architecture, which is capable of 15% faster IPC (instructions per clock) than its predecessor, Zen. According to AMD, the architecture also features several significant design improvements, "including larger cache sizes and a redesigned floating point engine".
AMD describe their top of the range model, the Ryzen 9 3900X, as the "highest performance 12 core desktop processor ever". This claim follows in house testing of the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X processor against Intel's Core i9-9920X, so it will be interesting to see if this claim holds up to scrutiny once the chip becomes available. Given that the Intel Core i9-9920X had a release price of $1,189 and the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X has a release price of $499, this is a significant claim.
The Ryzen 7 3700X is listed as having a thermal design power (TDP) of just 65W, compared with 105W for the top of the range Ryzen 9 3900X. It may be that this CPU is able to deliver high performance very efficiently.
In addition, AMD also unveiled the new X570 motherboard chipset for socket AM4, the first chipset to support PCIe 4.0. According to the press release from AMD, this new chipset "exhibited 42% faster storage performance than PCIe 3.09, enabling high-performance graphics card, networking devices, NVMe drives, and more. With PCIe 4.0 doubling the bandwidth for motherboards with the X570 chipset over PCIe 3.0, PC enthusiasts can gain more performance and flexibility when building custom systems."
According to AMD, 56 new motherboards are expected to become available when the new range of Ryzen CPUs launch on 7th July 2019.
