"The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed"

I've been running WinXP Pro sp2 for over a year now with no problems until
the other day when my kid tells me the computer won't boot up. I'm trying to
do a Repair install from my old WinXP Pro disk and I'm getting the above
error. My pc at work can read the disk just fine. I don't find an asms
file, but there's an asms folder with subfolders and files and my work pc has
no trouble reading all that. So I think the disk is okay.

I found article 311755 suggesting that I try loading the xcopy utility onto
my pc from an old Win98 sp2 disk or a WinME disk, but I don't have either of
those. I don't have a spare cd drive laying around either. What else can I
try? My wife will kill me if I lose all her digital pictures!

You can try making a SP2 slipstreamed version of your
current Windows XP, then use the new CD to perform a
"Repair Install".

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

I borrowed a brand new disc from work with XP Pro sp2 on it. I'm thinking
this is the equivalent of slipstreaming XP Pro with sp2, yes?

I started my computer and it automatically restarted Setup, until it got to
the point where it asked for the asms file. I put the new disc into the CD
drive and gave it the path to the ASMS folder. When I click OK it does
nothing -- no error, just continues to ask where the file is. I can read
this disc on my computer at work (just like my original disc), and I haven't
had any trouble with my cd drive prior to this, so I don't understand why it
cannot find the ASMS folder. Do you have any other suggestions?

TIA,
Bob

Can you ignore the error and continue?

Cheers
