I am having problems opening my Computer Management short-cut file. Everytime I click on the short-cut under Administrative Tools, it states that the short-cut is empty or missing! Does anyone know how I can reinstall this file? As far as I know, it's sort of an important file! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, that sounds like the logical thing to do and I would do that, if I knew where the original Computer Management file was.

Go to

START > CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > AND IT SHOULD BE THERE

** Re-read your post and see this is where you are having the problem.

Try these other two ways to see if you can even access the computer management snap in. This is where it is located:

%SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc

SystemRoot=Your Windows folder

Try running it from there also. If it does work then make sure your path is correct on your shortcuts (both on your desktop and under administrative tools). To do this right click the shortcut and click properties. It should show a "target" location, make sure it matches where the file is.

In other words more that likely it should look exactly as I have posted above.

or go to

START > RUN > then type in COMPMGMT.MSC but this only allows you to get into Computer Manager and doesn't allow you to create your shortcut.

As well as

Right click MY COMPUTER > GO TO MANAGE once again only brings you into the computer manager snap in.

You have to use the MMC console editor, you can make a new console with the computer management snap in. If you deleted the msc, then you have to recreate it

Variation on this theme

(W2K, SP4 on a Compaq refurb, 260.5MB, which came without system disks:)

The target MCCD file is present where the shortcut expects it (c:\WINNT\compmgmt.msc). No window appears, either on clicking the shortcut or invoking compmgmt.msc in command-line mode. Noting that the shortcut specifies an argument-- /s --I try it both with and without the argument. I hear a bit of disk access activity, but no window appears.
Silverhazesurfer's suggestion of "you have to recreate" the .msc is intriguing. From it I conclude there may be a way forward--with the MMC Console editor? with some other incantation?

Broader context is setting up networking between this W2K box and Lady Wife's WinMe laptop (Dell Inspiron).

Problems like this make me wonder if hacking away at a citadel-source OS is worth the effort. Comparable effort would perhaps have better payoff in L*n*x (tell it not in Gath).

I apologize if this constitutes hijacking the thread. Someone please tip me if so, and I'll start a new thread. Meanwhile I'll report progress here.
Thanks, gang, for your energy and web presence. I'll try to be a good neighbor.

Found why my compmgmt.msc -aka- Computer Management was not coming alive:
In the same Control Panel > Administrative Tools menu is a shortcut to Component Services.
In that long list of services is Windows Management Instrumentation,
-aka- C:\WINNT\System32\WBEM\WinMgmt.exe

This Service was 'disabled.' Changed that to 'manual.'
Now the Computer Management menu item agrees to open a window.

BillyBobbBuddy,

Here's what you may want for your new shortcut:

Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
Target type: Microsoft Common Console Document
Target location: system32
Shortcut key: None
Run: Normal window
Description: Manages disks and provides access to other tools to manage local and remote computers.
