Windows XP movie maker cannot open MSWMM file

Using movie maker 2.1, win. xp, home ed., sp3
When I save a project to my computer as .WMV (to be uploaded to Youtube), it will not play back and there is no thumbnail image on the saved .WMV file's icon. This strange file can not be used by Youtube. The saved .MSWMM file can not be re-opened by Movie Maker which tells me it is not a valid Movie Maker project file (the one it just saved as both .MSWMM & .WMV). Somehow this seems to be a codec issue but I have no idea how to fix it. Please offer some suggestions from your experience with MM. thanks, Jim :)
 
invalid file

I just tried again with a very short .AVI clip (all of my clips are .AVI). The .MSWMM file will now open in MM but the .WMV files will not play in Media Player. Made lot of videos but never had this problem.
