I notice in MSconfig/Startup most entries show HKLM/Software for their
location. What is HKLM? Search of the System Drive doesn't reveal it.

Thank you

It's a location in the registry.

In the Registry. HKey_Local_Machine

The Registry is made up of Hives. The one you noted is
HKey_Local_Machine - Globally applicable settings,etc
There are also hives for HKey_Current_User (Profile)
and others. The files associated with the hives are found
in C:\Windows\System32\Config

Thanks to all who replied. The answer was painfully obvious now you all
pointed it out. I've been in HKey_Local_Machine many times but never
thought of mentally referring to it as that.

Thanks again.
