Windows XP ftp downloads never work

me off since i built this system, it has never and i mean never worked when i try to download a file from an ftp server, the page will just sit there and do nothing, i've left it for 5 mins before and it just times out on IE6 and in firefox :confused:

its obviously something to do with this end because imrie and UKJag were able to download an update for me a while back (i think another thanks is needed :thumb: ) but it wouldn't work when i tried it

anyone have any ideas on why this happens ? could it be NIS screwing with the port ?
 
NIS ... :D

It blocks more legitimate sites than non-legitimate ... so, did you try with it turned off?
 
i know NIS is crap i've only got it because i cant be bothered with the hasle of trying to get rid of it

i havent turned it off but im in the process of unblocking just the ftp port which is 21 right ?
 
it wont work with NIS off and windows firewall on (and the other way round) or with both off :confused:
 
Well, are you sure that FTP is using 21 ... by right it should use 21 to receive & 20 up to 1024 if needed to answer.

Things are starting to get complicated ... what is the address?

hmmm, after a long wait ... I get the file of 177MB ... sod that.

But I cannot access the FTP server at all ... crap. :rolleyes:

unfortunately mucks i have already tried there and download.com, both of which link to the ulead ftp server :(

i dont need it, just wanted to have a play with it, not being able to download it got me annoyed because its never worked when the link is to an ftp server and i've had enough of it and i wanted to see if anyone knew why i cant download from ftp servers
 
so ithought i'd give it a try again and what do you know it works

, i dont know if what i did yesterday with my firewall settings did anything but it works and im happy
